I support this. All the dogs I've ever had have been shelter adopts, and I just started volunteering at an animal shelter. (Only bad part of that is, I want to adopt them all, but right now I can't even have a dog at all, since I can't afford it. )
i'm very sensitive when it comes to dogs, and i expect every person who gets one to take THE BEST possible care of him. this is very sad i'm not one of those who thinks people should stop buying dogs, if someone is in love with a particular breed and knows a lot about it, he should buy it. but those who want a dog just because of his looks (without knowing anything about the breed's character, behavior and so on, he shouldn't have a dog at all). those who just want a dog they should adopt and save a life. animal shelters are full mostly because people don't fix their dogs and then the puppies end up without a home because nobody wants them AND because of what i said earlier, they get a dog without knowing anything about it and then they can't deal with it so they abandon it...
I just got done watching a documentary on pet shops and puppy mills. It was featured on Animal Planet last night. I always try to tell people not to buy they puppies at pet stores. Of corse, it doesn't cost anything to look
However, I want to make sure that someone out there points out the importance of reputable breeders. For most people the shelter is an excellent place to start, but if you're looking for something specific you can't find at the shelters, a REPUTABLE breeder is the next best stop.
